You’re going to be amazed at just how easy. Here are the steps:
- First, figure out how many tiers you’d like to have. I was making mine for cupcakes, so I decided to have a few. If you want a cake plate, though, you’ll just need a plate and something to prop it off the table.
- Find different-sized plates. I suggest thrift stores or a dollar store as they’ll have the cheapest. Ikea is another source I use, but their “prettier” plates aren’t really that cheap.
- Find spacers to go in between each plate. For this, you can really chose anything you like – candlesticks, thin vases, small parfait glasses, aperitif glasses, whatever. There are a ton of little glass/metal thingamabobs at a thrift store that can be used. And don’t forget the old dollar store. That place is filled with cheap little crippity crap.
- Play around with the divider/plate configuration to find what looks the best. If you’ve got a hodge podge of different dividers, it’s good to try a few setups before you glue them down.
- Get out your epoxy and glue! There are plenty of different kinds of epoxy out there to choose from. Just make sure you get a clear one. Unless you want it to look a little milky/yellow.
- Let it dry for about 24 hours. Most of the epoxies set very quickly, but I like to be on the safe side and let it set for a while. Plus, I don’t want to serve epoxy-laced cookies. Call me crazy.
That’s it! Seriously. You didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you? And, get this, if you play your cards right, you could make an entire fancy dessert tray for under $10. If you just want a cake plate, it’ll be under $5. It’s crazy!
Oh, and they don’t even need to be used exclusively for desserts. After the party I threw was over, I started using one to “house” all my bracelets. It’s PERFECT!
